Hipster Whales hit the beach to Take 3 for the Sea!
“After living for nearly 100 years on this planet, I now understand the most important place on Earth is not on land…but at sea.”
Sir David Attenborough
It’s no surprise we all have a bit of a soft spot for the ocean here at Hipster Whale! Recently we teamed up with the amazing crew at Take 3 for the Sea for Green Game Jam 2025, to create an event that would make waves both in-game and IRL in helping ocean critters big and small.
Take 3’s message is simple: take 3 pieces of rubbish with you every time you visit a beach, park or waterway. It’s an easy action that anyone can do — and when enough people join in, it adds up to a big difference for our oceans and marine life.
To bring this mission to life, we launched the Crossy Clean-Up Collectathon: a limited-time event in Crossy Road where players collect pieces of plastic waste in-game in exchange for daily rewards. It was truly amazing to see our community members interact with the Collectathon’s message, going out and collecting trash themselves, and discussing the real-world impact of humans on our two new in-game characters (the Hermit Crab and the Blob Fish).
Your Impact
The best part of this update? Thanks to the support of our players, we were able to contribute to Take 3 for the Sea which enabled them to:
🦀 Remove 25,000 pieces of trash from the environment
🦀 Provide 80 clean-up kits to community-led events
🦀 Fund new online learning resources that will reach thousands of students
A huge thank you to everyone who picked up virtual trash, spread the word, or took three pieces (or more!) in real life.
A Real Life Crossy Clean-Up!
It’s important to live by our words, of course - so earlier this month, we headed to the beautiful shores of St Kilda Beach for a big beach clean-up!
Armed with trash bags and winter jackets to fend off the cold, we hit the sand to pick up as much rubbish as we could find.
Despite the brisk breeze and some close encounters with scary seagulls (just like in Crossy Road!), we managed to collect quite a few bags of rubbish. We found food wrappers, foam packaging, drink bottles, and fishing nets - to be honest, we were quite shocked by how much we were able to collect in just a short amount of time!
We invited other studios to join us in Taking 3 for the Sea, and some absolute legends took the challenge! Earthwise Games headed to the beach near their studio in beautiful Mauritius, and the Hungry Shark team at Ubisoft cleaned up the shores of Barcelona. Champions!
The power is yours!
Now it’s your turn, Crossy Crew! If you’re out and about these Summer holidays, don’t forget to take three pieces of rubbish and keep our oceans beautiful!
